La Morena

Huehuetenango, Guatemala

The La Morena program was created in 2016 by Genuine Origin to give female coffee growers access to the global supply chain and to address gender inequality in coffee farming. It provides women essential resources, training, and fair trade opportunities to enhance their coffee production and business skills. The program started small; with an import of 32 boxes of green coffee beans. Fast-forward to 2023: The specialty coffee sourcing team in Guatemala worked with over 800 women farmers. The initiative highlights the rich, distinctive flavors of Huehuetenango coffee while fostering positive social and economic change.

This is the first year East Iceland Coffee Company has bought from this program. La Morena is the lot that goes into Mile Square and Mile Square Dark.
